Causes of Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis may be in a primary (Type 1 and 2) or secondary form. PRIMARY OSTEOPOROSIS Primary osteoporosis is associated with the process of normal ageing. Type 1 or Postmenopausal Osteoporosis This is more common in women and develops after menopause where bone loss accelerates rapidly caused due to a lack of estrogen. It also affects men who are castrated or have low testosterone levels, such as older men. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in 5 to 7 years after menopause. Type 2 or Senile Osteoporosis This results from age-related decreased bone formation caused by calcium or vitamin D deficiency. It mostly affects people older than 70. Older women may have both senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis. SECONDARY OSTEOPOROSIS This can be caused by certain medical conditions and medications that can disrupt bone remodeling.
