Most drug therapies focus mainly on relieving pain or swelling while others slow the damage to your joints. There are two important factors when choosing medication; the intensity of the pain and potential side effects of the medication. You must work with your healthcare professional to determine the medication that works best for you.

Pain Relievers

Analgesics relieve pain but not inflammation or swelling. They are suitable for those with mild to moderate pain.

Creams, Rubs, and Sprays

These are applied directly over the painful area for temporary relief. Never use them with heat treatments.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs can reduce pain and swelling. They are suitable for those with moderate to severe pain. Long term usage may cause stomach ulcers or affect kidney function.

Steriod Injections

Steroids is injected in or around affected joints for fast, targeted pain relief. The effect may last up to several months. Overuse may result in joint damage.
