There are certain parts of the body that often fall prey to osteoporosis. These fractures in turn may lead to pain and limit your mobility.

HIP FRACTURES

Most older people fracture their hips by falling while walking on level ground, mostly indoor. Hip fractures are the most traumatic, and painful and may require hospitalisation. One may not regain former independence after a severe hip fracture.

SPINE FRACTURES

Spine fractures usually involve a change in the shape of the vertebra rather than breakage in the bone. They are commonly caused by lifting heavy objects, severe coughing and bending or twisting the body. Such fractures may not induce paralysis but may affect the ability to lift or bend.

WRIST FRACTURES

Such fractures are commonly caused by extending an arm or hand to break a fall ,and can result in many limitations. Most people experience pain, swelling and tenderness for some time. Outpatient treatment is adequate but severe fractures may require surgery.

THE CORRECT WAY TO LIFT OBJECTS

Avoid lifting heavy weights or sudden movements of your upper body. When lifting objects, make sure your posture is correct, rather than bending over at the waist., use your back muscles to lift, keep your back straight, squat and use your leg strength to straighten up.
