Prevention is generally more successful than treatment. It is important to build and keep as much bone from as young as possible. The first step is to consume or take adequate daily amounts of calcium and vitamin D.

CALCIUM

Calcium is a mineral required to build and maintain strong and healthy bones. It also plays a vital role in regulating normal bodily functions. Your body does not produce calcium and inadequate calcium intake may cause tooth decay, and in severe cases, osteoporosis later in life.

Calcium can be obtained from dairy products, green leafy vegetables and soy beans. If you are unable to get enough calcium from your diet, you can add a calcium supplement to your daily routine to make up the calcium gap.

A good calcium supplement should provide the optimal elemental calcium content with high absorbability to obtain the right calcium balance in the body. Elemental calcium refers to the actual usable calcium in a calcium compound. For example, calcium carbonate contains 40% elemental calcium, so 1250mg contains 500mg of elemental calcium.

Note: It is important to note that the body can probably absorb up to 500mg of calcium at one time, though absorbtion varies from individuals. Daily intake exceeding 2000mg is not known to offer additional benefit.

Optimal calcium intake may vary according to age. Refer to the table below for recommended calcium intake.

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin found in food such as fortified milk, eggs or liver. It is formed when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Try spending 5 to 15 minutes in the sun per day, two to three times per week. You can also get vitamin D through supplements .

Vitamin D assists in the dietary absorption of calcium, which is necessary for bone formation.
